When powder skiing turns deadly

There’s nothing pretty about this video. You think there is, to start. It’s filled with beautiful powder skiing and boarding, the kind you find in interior British Columbia, all light and dry cold smoke. Then it all goes horribly wrong.

This video, posted by Dan Michalchuk, reveals how quickly avalanches can hit and how little time you have to react. Lucky for Dan and his brother they survived and were only partially buried.

But it sure does remind us to be forever vigilant. This crew obviously know their stuff and they still got hit. There’s always something to learn when in the backcountry.

It’s enough to make you invest in one of these:

  1. I think in this day and age if you’re riding Alps, US or Japow and you intend to ski offpiste at all, you must have an airbag back pack of some sort.

  2. As with any new tech, I think as time goes by and airbags become more accessible through lower prices, or being made available via rental, you’ll see them become more widely used.
