The first turns of the Aussie ski season happened today at Mt Buller

Today Mt Buller locals made history skiing 80 days before the official opening of the snow season.

It was all smiles as locals dusted off skis, snowboards and toboggans to enjoy a history-making slide on snow at Mt Buller more than 2 months ahead of the official June opening of the snow season.

The snow in March is possible due to the newly installed TechnoAlpin 220 Snowfactory’s ability to make snow, even at warm temperatures. Mt Buller has been commissioning and testing the new refrigeration snowmaking technology this week in preparation for the upcoming snow season. They produced over 500 cubic metres of snow much to the delight of snow enthusiasts in the resort who seized the opportunity today to ski on the ‘test snow’.

Buller Ski Lifts General Manager Laurie Blampied was one of the first to make some ski turns down the 100 metre slope this morning, “It’s skiing really well and feels just like a spring snow day! This is an exciting day for Mt Buller and I’m able to confirm the Snowfactory is working well. We are delighted we can make snow already and deliver on our promise of skiing on Bourke Street for Opening Weekend in June.”

“This Snowfactory is a game-changing investment for Mt Buller. The tests this week have exceeded our expectations. To see this many people enjoying snow in March, all smiling ear to ear 80 days before the opening of the ski season is an incredible moment in our resort’s history.”

Mt Buller will start making snow in earnest in May ready for the Opening weekend of the snow season. Mt Buller is the only resort in Australia able to promise skiing and boarding for the start of the season on 10 June.
