Queenstown and Wanaka are under lockdown today with a surprise spring powder snow storm that has already delivered over 30 centimetres on the ski fields and it is still heavily snowing.
Both towns and surrounding areas have received snow to lake level and as of this morning’s forecast both The Remarkables and Treble Cone are set to score over half a metre of snow from this storm. The best snow storm of this season thus far.
Yes, we know it’s mid September. Will someone tell Ullr? Uh, no, please don’t tell him.
All resorts are currently closed. The Remarkables and Coronet Peak are experiencing the power outage that has hit the Wakatipu Basin from the storm. Cardrona and Treble Cone have no visibility and have made the call to shut up shop and tend to the storm for the day.
We all know what this means. Bluebird. Powder. Day. Tuesday.
Cardrona are calling 45 centimetres already fallen this morning and Coronet claiming 30 centimetres while Remarks is also claiming 45 centimetres. Did we mention it hasn’t stopped snowing? Oh, and it’s the largest single snowfall dump of 2018 for New Zealand.
This was Frankton near Queenstown this morning.
Arrowtown was already covered in a blanket of snow at 7.00am New Zealand time with fat flakes falling from the sky that have not stopped 2.5 hours later.
And Coronet Peak were playing with rulers. As you do.

Meanwhile at Cardrona it was a game of frozen statues. Yes, he is standing. STANDING, people. Standing.
Let’s just say prepare to be bombarded with powder skiing and snowboarding images and videos in your news feeds tomorrow.
This pic by our contributor Jen Houltham, says it all in Wanaka.
As you were.
