Australia’s Winter Olympians swapped the white carpet for the cat walk today. Silver Medalist David Morris, World Champion Britt Cox and Sochi 2014 Olympians Danielle Scott, Matt Graham and Jarryd Hughes modeled the ‘team uniform’ for a select media crew today.
These cool PyeongChang Olympic hopefuls would be just as comfortable serving up a bullet proof latte barista style in the inner city coffee den with checked button shirts and fitted tan chinos.
Hey Britt, make mine a non fat frappaccino to go, thanks.
But then add the blue cricket, sorry, school, sorry, Winter Olympic blazer and bottle green tie. Then, it’s straight to the principal’s office for detention.
But I didn’t do it, Mr Graham, it wasn’t me.
There’s no doubt we’ve definitely improved from the air hostess look, the preppy Ken and Barbie doll looks and the bank uniform looks of years gone by. But I can’t help but think school prefect when I look at Dani Scott in the photo above. Then, we did go to the same school, ok, decades apart.
Either way they scrub up well in uniform fashion, our Olympians and would fit in to any country races event (horses, not skiers) with the offspring of the landed gentry. I think it’s just that it’s weird to see our favorite winter athletes dressed in anything vaguely corporate, smart casual and official when we’re used to seeing them in ski gear. They all look mighty chuffed, if you ask me. So that’s a job well done, right?
The uniforms, created by The Total Image Group, include blazers in green and deep navy with the names of every Australian Winter Olympian on the inside lining. Blazers are made from 100% Australian Merino wool fabric and feature brass buttons with the Olympic crest (nice touch).
“Having the names of past Winter Olympians adds a special touch on this uniform and one that will mean a lot to the athletes. It continues a tradition that was started at the London 2012 Games” explains 2018 Chef de Mission, Ian Chesterman.
“Receiving your Australian Olympic formal uniform should be an exciting experience for all of our Team members and I think TIG has created pieces that will facilitate that.”
XTM, in their fourth games partnership, will provide the 2018 Team with gloves, socks, baselayers and bags, plus Australian merino wool gloves for the formal uniform.
Dual Olympian and 2017 Moguls World Champion, Britt Cox was one of five athletes got a preview peak at the designs earlier in the year.
“I was lucky enough to see the uniform in April and I knew right away I loved it,” Cox said. “The Olympics are the pinnacle of our sporting careers, so being able to give our feedback on the formal uniform is really special. These uniforms are a symbol of years of hard work and dedication in our respective sports. Every time I put it on, I feel a great sense of pride for of accomplishments and for my country.”
Coming off Australia’s top Winter season to date with a total of 40 World Cup and World Championship medals as well as two World Championship titles, a Team of approximately 50 athletes will compete across 11 sports at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.
