New World Champions, podiums galore and an X Games medal. That is the week that was for Australia in the snow world.
Australians celebrating Australia Day at ski resorts around the globe today have extra reasons to celebrate after a stellar week on the world competition circuit for our skiers and snowboarders.
Ski aerialist, Laura Peel, is a new World Champion after taking the gold at the FIS Ski & Snowboard World Championships in Austria. She was joined a few days later by Scotty James, new World Champion half pipe snowboarder.
Britt Cox took the bronze podium for ski moguls a the same championships and Russ Henshaw took silver for ski slopestyle.
In a controversial move dubbed ‘arrogant’ by reigning Olympic Gold Medalist, David Wise, FIS scheduled the World Championships during the Aspen X Games. Ski slopestyle and Ski Halfpipe dates clashed meaning many freestyle ski athletes were forced to choose one or the other of the two events.
Not so for Torah Bright who competed at FIS World Championships and then at X Games. While she failed to secure a podium in Austria she took bronze at snowboard halfpipe at Aspen X Games adding to her impressive four X Games Medal (two gold, two silver) Haul over recent years.
Scotty James brought home the bronze medal with Zach Elder in the X Games Special Olympics Unified Sports debut snowboard slalom. X Games snowboarders were paired with Special Olympics athletes to compete as Unified teams in a dual slalom race.
The competition winter circuit is only half way through. Stand by for more medal prospects for Australia.
