Last week saw 10 000 lucky skiers and boarders ‘stranded’ in Cervinia, Italy, this week 12 000 are ‘stuck’ in Zermatt Switzerland after a mega metre plus snow storm set off avalanches and peaked danger to extreme.

Reports out of Zermatt are that up to two meters of snow has fallen in the past day due to a warm weather system from the south that brought a ton of snow up high. Some homes in the Swiss alpine regions have also been evacuated due to avalanche risk.

Meanwhile the fine folks in Tignes, France woke to find their cars lost in the snow.

It’s not surprising when you consider how much snow has fallen in Tignes and Val D’Isere this week, hot on the heels of the last storm. 2018 is shaping up to be Europe’s year after too many sparse winters.

The alps is definitely where you want to be once the chairlifts are dug out and the avalanche conditions settle. First tracks are going to be off the charts with almost two meters of snowfall from this storm alone. Check out these tracks from Austria this week.

Though be warned, avalanches are guaranteed with risk set to 5, the highest possible. Last week’s mega storm produced some serious avalanche activity caught on web cameras.

Stay safe out there.
