You may know him as Dr Grant in Jurassic Park but turns out Sam Neill is also a director of ski films circa 1977.
Neill directed the seventies ski movie called ‘Flare – A Ski Trip‘, a sixteen minute short film about freestyle skiing created for the New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Department.
The film follows five New Zealanders and two Americans, all freestyle “hot dog” skiing in New Zealand – Arthur Klap, Lynn Klap, Huia Irwin, John Irwin, Gary Bingham, Mike Ross, Randy Weiman. Filmed at Mt Hutt, Queenstown and Tongariro National Park it has been translated into French, Japanese, Italian, German and Spanish.
But best of all, this rad ski edit has recently reared its hot dogging head as a four minute music video for Kiwi musician Bluey Green’s debut track Morning Sunshine.
And what a morning it is filled with stretch pants, bandanas and beards taking on moguls, kickers, ski ballet and powder under a seventies helmet free sky, now set to upbeat music that just makes you want to ski.
Trust us, it will brighten your day.
Neill also posted Bluey Green’s music video on his Instagram this week.
“I know it’s a period piece – it’s worth watching for the ski outfits alone – but my goodness with all this sunny optimism in the song and all that New Zealand blue sky… it just feels , I don’t know , refreshing” wrote Neill.
“Anyway, I love it . I think you will too.”
Yep, we do.
