Spring skiing in Japan may be closer than you think with reports out of Japan of border changes ahead.

Nikkei reported yesterday that short term business travel to Japan and overseas stationing for work in Japan will be approved from mid February.

The article also reveals that privately-funded foreign students who would not be able to graduate outside Japan will be permitted to enter with up to 1,000 students and business travellers allowed to arrive each day.

The Japan Times  reports that “Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Saturday that the government is considering easing Japan’s tight entry restrictions for nonresident foreign nationals, with local media reporting that an announcement could be made as early as next week.”

But the really good (fingers crossed) and hopeful news is that the country may be considering allowing all foreign arrivals from March 1. This also includes raising the maximum number of daily arrivals from 3,500 so more “skiers and snowboarders” could be hitting the slopes.

It is also believed that those foreign arrivals will no longer be required to quarantine if vaccinated, but this too is yet to confirmed.

With record snowfalls in Japan this season there will be plenty of snow for those who decide to jump on a last minute plane when border restrictions lift.
