Australia has won Winter Olympic gold in the first time in 12 years thanks to 23 year old Jakara Anthony from Victoria.
It’s the first Olympic medal for any Australian female mogul skier and the first time in history Australia has won two medals on the one Winter Olympic day after Tess Coady won bronze in snowboard slopestyle.
The 23-year-old Anthony scored 83.09 points in the six-woman super final. American Jaelin Kauf (80.28) was second and Russian Anastasiia Smirnova (77.72) )was third.
Anthony dominated the two-day competition, posting the top score in all four rounds.
“It’s really incredible to know that all the hard work that I have been putting into my whole skiing career is really paying off,” Anthony told the Seven Network.
“I’m just lost for words.
“(Being able to handle the pressure) is a a real testament to myself and the team around me in the last four years and the really solid processes we follow.
“It really hasn’t been easy.
“I think that I am a much better athlete and person because of it.”
Until Sunday, Australia’s most recent Winter Olympic champions were Torah Bright (snowboard halfpipe) and Lydia Lassila (women’s aerials) at the 2010 Vancouver Games,
Australia’s Winter Olympics gold medallists are Steven Bradbury in short track speed skating 2002 Salt Lake City, Alisa Camplin in aerials in 2006 in Turin, Dale Begg-Smith in moguls in 2010 in Vancouver, Torah Bright in women’s snowboard halfpipe in 2010 in Vancouver and Lydia Lassila also in Vancouver for aerials and now Jakara Anthony in women’s moguls in Beijing 2022.
