As families hit the slopes this season Fair Trading is reminding consumers to be aware of their rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
“Ski holiday products and services are no different to any others in that consumer guarantees apply,” said Commissioner Rod Stowe.
“The consumer guarantee means that goods and services must match the description given, be fit for purpose and in good working order.
Consumers should also be aware of the terms and conditions associated with booking holidays. Be sure to check all the details of any confirmation documents you receive to make sure they line up with what you have booked.
Read up on any cancellation policies and know what is and isn’t covered, for example a business may not provide a refund if you cancel based on weather conditions.
Traders have an obligation to ensure terms and conditions are made clear to consumers. Make sure any agreement is confirmed in writing.
In 2014 NSW Fair Trading received just over 1,300 complaints in the travel and tourism category so this issue affects thousands of families each year.
Know your rights, be safe and enjoy the snow.”
- Ski tickets or lesson bookings may not be refundable, even if weather turns inclement, you become sick or get injured. Check terms and conditions carefully.
