Big news in Queenstown today as Alastair Porter from the Porter Group announces plans for a $50million, 9.8km gondola from Queenstown to The Remarkables.
The idea is to set up a Gondola Events Plaza near Remarkables Park Town Centre and to operate the gondola from there up to NZ Ski’s Remarkables new base building. The gondola would have 140 eight seater cabins.
It would make it the longest gondola in Australasia and would certainly reduce the intrepid driving traffic on the road to the Remarkables during winter. The gondola would also be used by hikers, mountain bikers and conference guests at the Remarkables Park Town Centre.
The idea is, subject to consent, have the gondola running by 2019.
Submissions have been lodged with the Queenstown Lakes District Council for the project, and a resource consent application would be lodged in early 2016.
fantastic idea.
That’s a looooong ride up & down. @ 18km/hr top speed, 30 mins…
It’s not a bad idea but I would actually like to see the gondola run from Queenstown to Coronet Peak. Not practical I know.
